Political platform for Nordic Green Left Alliance

The aim of the Nordic Green Left Alliance is to provide a clear, progressive answer to the growing problems of our society. We realise that we are living in an increasingly interdependent world and that national answers to social, political and ecological questions must be formulated with an international perspective. The most serious problems facing us – social problems and environmental degradation – requires solutions urgently.

We base our political work on the pillars of solidarity: international solidarity among the peoples of the world, social justice and an equitable distribution of wealth, gender equality, and solidarity with future generations, who depend on us for an ecological sustainable development.

- We are committed to increasing democratic responsibility and participation in politics, in the economy and in civil society. We want to place people and their environment in the centre of a new political order. Our aim is peace and solidarity in our own countries, in Europe and in the world. We oppose militarism, chauvinism, racism and xenophobia. We are striving for a society of free and equal citizens and oppose all forms of social exclusion. We reject policies that increase unemployment and we are committed to the development of a new and positive link between employment, social and environmental policies which promotes development for all.

- We want a new international order based on multilateral international institutions rather than unilateral hegemony. We believe that the United Nationsmust be strengthened, reformed and must become the decision-making authority for peaceful conflict resolution, and to uphold international law and justice. We see an increasingly unequal world, where the gap between North and South is widening. This is reinforced in many international institutions, such as WTO, WB and IMF. We want to establish a new north-south relationship progressively overcoming dependence and unequal exchange.

- We want a society with gender equality. The persistent inequality of women is rooted in the structural imbalance of their position in the labour market and in the area of domestic labour. It is underpinned by patriarchal, sexist attitudes and ideology. The equality of women will never be achieved until women participate to the same degree as men in all sectors and at all levels of social and political life. Women must be guaranteed the ability to participate fully in all social and economic spheres, men must take individual responsibility and participate fully in all social domestic activities.

- We want a society based on social awareness. Despite the significant achievements of the last centuries, European society today is increasingly characterised by the widening gap between rich and poor, rising levels of unemployment and social exclusion, the systematic destruction of the natural environment, growing alienation from the political process and the threat of racism and reactionary nationalism. We want a welfare society based on a fair distribution of work and income, subordination of the market economy to the needs of human beings, an emphasis on social and collective ownership within the framework of a mixed economy, and a recognition of our obligation to the environment, the developing world and the generations to come.

- We are a Nordic alliance, but it does not mean that we are regionalists. On the contrary, internationalism is a basic foundation of our parties, and international solidarity one of our main philosophies and activities. European and worldwide cooperation with progressive green and left forces will be a priority for our alliance.

- We are a green alliance. We want sustainable development for the world and Europe, to establish a balance among the economy, the population and the natural environment, with an industrial model based on the use of clean technology, energy and resource efficiency, and a major reduction in waste. This objective is impossible to attain without a fundamental change in values. We need a reduction in consumption by the most favoured in the interests of access to basic consumption for everybody. This is based on broad popular participation in political life and in the concrete everyday work to achieve a green planet.

- We are a left alliance. We defend democracy and human rights. We denounce the totalitarian undemocratic system of the Soviet union and other states, once claiming to be socialist. Socialism means the extension of democracy to all sectors of society, a society where the freedom of each and every one is the precondition for the freedom of all.
