The Left Alliance of
Finland |
 |
The Left Alliance is a political movement formed
by people desiring social change and a fair and equal development.
The activities of the party are based on three core values
– freedom, democracy and socially and ecologically sustainable
development. Though operating in Finland, the values and political
demands of the Left Alliance are universal and thus extend
beyond the national borders. Change that advances freedom,
democracy and sustainable development is required not only
in Finland, but in Europe and throughout the whole world."
(Party Program of the Left Alliance, 1998.)
The Left Alliance (Vasemmistoliitto in Finnish,
Vänsterförbundet in Swedish) was founded in 1990. Since its
founding, the party has won around 10 per cent of votes in
all parliamentary and municipal elections. In the parliamentary
elections of 2003 the party won 9.9 % of the votes and 19
seats in the 200-seat parliament.
