The Left-Green Movement
of Iceland

The Left-Green Movement (Vinstrihreyfingin
- grænt framboð) was founded on February 6th 1999 after a
few months work, aiming to unite socialist and conservationist
groups for the elections held on May 8th.
The cornerstones of its policy
are the following:
Conservation of the environment
Equality and social justice
Fair and prosperous economy
Independent foreign policy
Women´s liberation
Members of the Left-Green Movement are approximately
1800 by now. The chairman is Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, MP, and
vice-chairman is Katrín Jakobsdóttir. The secretary-general
of the party is Svandís Svavarsdóttir. The party got 8,8% of
votes cast in the elections of May 10th 2003 and has by now
5 representatives in the parliament. They are: Jón Bjarnason,
Kolbrún Halldórsdóttir, Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, Þuríður Backman
and Ögmundur Jónasson.
